ZEISS DuraVision BlueProtect UV
The blue-violet light blocking coating from ZEISS.
DuraVision® BlueProtect UV is a coating specifically developed for customers who spend a lot of their time indoors and are exposed to blue-violet light from LEDs as well as TV, computer or tablet screens. ZEISS' blue light coatings for spectacle lenses block specific wavelengths of light, and can help to relieve the eyestrain perceived by the customers which is typically associated with blue light exposure.
Why is blue-violet light relevant to your customer?
What is blue light and how can blue light coatings help your customers?
Natural light, i.e., sunlight, contains many types of coloured light. One of the shades of light in the visible spectrum is blue light. It accounts for about one third of high-energy visible light (HEV). Blue light ranges from 390 to 500 nm on the visible light spectrum, which penetrates the eyes easily, passing through the cornea and lens to the retina. Blue light filter solutions such as blue light lens coatings for spectacles are a suitable solution to this problem. By wearing appropriate lenses with a blue light coating, a reduced amount of blue-violet light can enter the eye. Scientific evidence has indicated there are benefits to blue light exposure, however potential associated risks have also been mentioned (referred to as the dualism of blue light).
A closer look: the positive and negative sides of blue light
The range between 390 and 440nm of the light spectrum is considered to be the potentially harmful part of the HEV spectrum. It is everywhere, although its intensity varies greatly. While a typical LCD computer monitor produces a brightness of 250 cd/m2, a clear blue sky at midday is 32 times as bright. Direct sunlight can be thousands of times as bright.
Blue light lens coatings and more: ZEISS blue violet light solutions.
ZEISS offers a comprehensive blue-violet light blocking portfolio that meets different consumer requirements for indoor and outdoor activities. The range of products filters different amounts of blue-violet light depending on the activity.
- DuraVision® BlueProtect by ZEISS, a blue light blocking coating for lenses which partially filters blue-violet light; ideal for indoor activities.
- PhotoFusion X by ZEISS are tinted and self-tinting lenses that block different intensities of blue-violet light, and also offer full UV protection.
- BluePro® by ZEISS: The latest in blue light blocking technology, where the blue light filtering properties are incorporated within the lens structure.
DuraVision® BlueProtect by ZEISS
DuraVision® BlueProtect by ZEISS is a unique, high-performance blue light lens coating that offers your customers:
- An increased reflectance in the blue-violet spectrum of light.
- Selective attenuation of the blue-violet light passing through the lens.
- A reduced amount of blue-violet light entering the eye.
DuraVision® BlueProtect coating has a blue light filter which attenuates blue light in the range from 390 to 440 nm. It still lets the “healthy” blue light through that our bodies need, thereby providing greater visual comfort.
In addition to blocking blue-violet light, ZEISS DuraVision BlueProtect comes with all the premium features of ZEISS coatings, including:
- A superior hard coat.
- Easy-to-clean lenses to provide better vision.
- DuraVision Platinum UV on the backside of the lens.
Anti-reflective vs. blue light coatings: What is the difference?
Both anti-reflective and blue filter coatings are applied to the surface of the customers' lenses and have the advantage of minimising glare. However, blue light lens coatings offer additional protection against blue light. AR coatings do not block blue light.
